Summary

Carey’s Junior Schools at Donvale and Kew are vibrant, busy and welcoming. In both of our Junior Schools, learning is an exciting journey. Our inquiry-based learning approach and tailored curriculum allow each student to develop at their own pace, providing the challenges, encouragement and support every child needs to succeed.

Prep

Prep is a special year and the beginning of formal education. A carefully designed Prep area supports the children to transition from Kindergarten to school with ease. The Prep rooms are connected learning spaces with specific areas where staff provide stimulating play activities related to investigations in the classroom and which foster both imaginative and co-operative play. The designated areas also provide for small groups involved in focused support activities. Parents are involved in their children’s learning during class time through PMP (Perceptual Motor Program which assists literacy development) and twice weekly Learning Centres.

Year 1 and 2

In Years 1 and 2, the foundations in literacy and numeracy need to be firmly laid and this is why we call them our Foundation Years. We have a rigorous program that is distinguished by a balanced approach of explicit teaching and inquiry. Our classroom teachers and students are well supported and resourced by Learning Development and expert coordinators who assist with meeting the individual needs of all students. These years investigate aspects of community and how they interrelate and support one another, particularly in light of our overriding school rule, Take Care that everyone is Safe, Happy and Learning. Year 1 builds on developing independent learners in the 21st Century requiring the ability to navigate the digital world confidently.

Year 3

Year 3 provides all students with the opportunity to experience a string instrument, with expert instruction provided by accomplished instrumental teachers.

Year 4

Year 4 continues the experiential learning with students exploring what it means to live sustainably, leading the campus in sustainable practices as the Enviro Captains. The students are responsible for monitoring the use of power at Carey Donvale, collecting and recycling waste, composting and ensuring the health of the worm farms. They propagate indigenous plants with their ELC Buddies that are raised and planted around the campus, and work with the local council on community planting projects around the Mullum area.

Year 5

Year 5 focuses on ‘Understanding Our Past and What Makes Community’. The students explore our indigenous heritage as well as what happened during the Colonial period. Students not only learn about history and traditions that shaped our community but also some of the economic principles of producing and selling to meet a community’s needs.

Year 6

All Year 6 students participate in a leadership program that focuses on helping the students learn about themselves and the varied forms of leadership required at different times. It is designed to prepare and assist the students in their transition from Junior to Middle School. The year starts with a special two-day conference that includes students from both Junior School campuses.
