Level of study: Masters Degrees
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) continues the College’s service to education from its delivery of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary). Over eighty per cent of those graduates have either found employment in Christian, independent and government schools in Australia and internationally; or, pursued further studies. Both graduates and employers hold the particular focus of delivering this initial course in teacher education from a Christian perspective and within a challenging and supportive environment in high regard.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) aims to develop graduates who will contribute to schools and other settings as teachers. If you already hold a degree in another discipline related to the primary state or national curriculum, Eastern’s Master of Teaching (Primary) qualifies you to apply for provisional teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Teacher registration with VIT enables you to teach at Independent, Catholic and government schools and in other educational settings as professionals and leaders in Victoria.
This course may also open the doors to teach in other parts of Australia and overseas, depending on registration requirements of those states and countries outside of Victoria. Graduates will develop abilities to design and implement curriculum and assessment; understand diverse learners and learning processes; and, engage with educational ideas and their adaptations. Graduates may also continue to post-graduate studies in education and a variety of related fields.
The Master of Teaching Secondary is designed for new intakes in February and July. It builds an awareness of disadvantage and social justice and explores the significant role for good that education from a Christian perspective can provide.
The course fits the guidelines developed by The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia – Standards and Procedures (2015). It is designed to provide graduates with a broad understanding of educational theory and practices, as well as the ethical and legal dimensions of the professional. The course has a developmental approach to learning and teaching in both its nature and content.
The research focus in the second year is on action research and becoming a reflexive practitioner. A feature of the College’s approach is the delivery of a capstone unit Creating and designing for the Profession which will allow students to enter the profession with a valued product to benefit them and schools they work in, though a research project can be completed if desired.
Professional Experience is critical as a basis for making sense of educational theory and practice. Students are given observational experience in schools at the end of semester one. Learning through practice is also critical in developing professional pedagogical knowledge and is delivered in the end of semester one and two of the second year.
Most subjects are delivered in a blended format that integrates face-to-face and online learning experiences.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) aims to develop graduates who will contribute to schools and other settings as teachers. The course consists of 15 coursework units, 3 professional experience units and a capstone unit.
