La Trobe's Master of Internet of Things (IoT) combines technical knowledge with practical learning to give you advanced programming and systems design skills.

Build the skills you need to succeed in a more connected future by studying the key components of IoT, including platforms, protocols and protection.

The first of its kind in Australia, La Trobe's Master of IoT is grounded in industry practice. You'll have the opportunity to work on one of Bendigo's many IoT technology projects like Clever Weather or the Long Range IoT Network.

Or, if you're dreaming of a research career, you can undertake an industry-based thesis in your final year.

You'll learn:

IoT cloud data

Discover how cloud data can be used as tool for brainstorming and informed decision making.

Industry impact of IoT technology

Learn how IoT can be used to improve and innovate sectors like healthcare, construction and mining.

IoT programming and systems design

Work with IoT technology first-hand and produce a prototype IoT solution or system for a real-world industry partner.

Security protocols and privacy risks

Gain an understanding of IoT security and privacy risks by analysing the design of secure hardware and software.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.


After graduation, you could work across a wide range of sectors including healthcare, cybersecurity, agriculture, construction and energy management.

Possible roles include:

IoT system engineer

Develop, manage and monitor IoT devices and systems, including cloud/edge servers and sensors. Write software to communicate with devices.

IoT architect

Spearhead development of the IoT vision. Design end-to-end IoT architecture, enable the design and construction of IoT solutions, and create new processes.

IoT business analyst

Work within businesses to ensure IoT projects are delivered on time and to high standards. Develop business processes to optimise the ongoing functioning of IoT technology.

Industrial UI/UX designer

Make IoT technology easy to use. Create software and features that make it easy to navigate and use devices.

Graduates can also follow alternative paths into the IoT industry and pursue a career as part of a business incubator or start-up.

Entry criteria

The minimum entry requirement is successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or its equivalent).

Prior learning developed through relevant work experience or professional accreditation, where it is deemed to be at least equivalent to that obtained through a Bachelor degree, may be considered. In making an offer to an applicant, the University will give consideration to a range of factors to determine whether an applicant has demonstrated the capacity to work at a Masters level, including academic record, English proficiency, and/or employment experience.

240 credit point pathway (2 years): Successful completion of a 3 year Australian Bachelor degree (or its equivalent).

180 credit point pathway – COGNATE ENTRY(18 months):

Successful completion of a 3 year Australian

Bachelor degree (or its equivalent) in a Computer Science, Information Technology field

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0

TOEFL Internet based (iBT): overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.

Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50.

C1 Advanced: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

C2 Proficiency: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
