Summary
In this advanced diploma course, you’ll gain the theoretical and practical skills to work as a technical officer or engineering supervisor. in the mechanical and manufacturing industries.
You’ll develop an understanding of technical and managerial concepts, and be able to work in small, medium and large enterprises as well as the defence forces.
Mechanical engineering is a diverse and challenging field where you will be responsible for designing, improving and building mechanical devices, systems and machines to solve problems across a range of industrial sectors and within general society.
How you will learn
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Electives and program structure
The advanced diploma covers engineering skills including drafting, computer-aided drafting, and use of hand and power tools, machining and manufacturing processes.
You’ll learn skills in basic machining operations and fabrication tasks, as well as how to select, set up, and use a range of test equipment.
You’ll also be introduced to engineering mathematics, scientific principles, and materials engineering. You may also learn to apply computer-aided manufacturing processes and programming.

Career
After graduating from this course, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to be employed as a technical officer, engineering assistant, supervisor or manager. You may work in offices, technical laboratories, workshops or manufacturing plants.
Mechanical and manufacturing paraprofessional engineers:
assist professional engineers in mechanical design
supervise and manage manufacturing and assembly plants
construct, operate and maintain machines
manufacture and maintain mechanical equipment, mechanical installations, and mechanical facilities
Further study
When you successfully complete the Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Mechanical) and achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 (out of 4.0), you are guaranteed entry into the following programs and will receive three semesters of advanced standing (equivalent to 144 credit points):

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification) with a minimum 50% average.
Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary Diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
English language requirements
To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)
TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36)
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component.
