Summary

Learn a language by studying the Diploma in Languages alongside your undergraduate degree at Melbourne. You will demonstrate a master of both the oral/aural and written/reading skills to communicate effectively in another language and appreciate its cultural contexts.

Languages available include:

Undergraduate students can commence the diploma in their first year or second year of their respective bachelors degrees.

Students enrolling in the diploma concurrently with a bachelors degree from first year will complete 100 points of study in addition to their bachelors degree program. Students choosing this option will be able to complete 400 points in total.

Students enrolling in the diploma concurrently with a bachelors degree from second year, having completed 25 points of language at Level 1, will complete a further 75 points of language study within the diploma. Students choosing this option will be able to complete 350 points in total.
Students enrolling in the diploma at third year, having completed 25 points of level 1 and 25 points at level 2 in their bachelors degree, will complete the remaining 100 points of the diploma. Students choosing this option will be able to complete 350 points in total.

Careers

Being able to speak a second language literally opens the door to the world. A language greatly increases your chances landing work in the international career market. You can work as a diplomat, in government, or as a translator.

Honours

If you'd like to be considered for entry to the BA (Honours), note that as a Diploma graduate, you must have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree to be eligible to apply for the BA (Honours).

The Honours program comprises a research project as well as specialist subjects. Having completed a Diploma of Languages may help you work across different areas of studies, work with translation or provide new insight to your research.

Entry criteria

To be eligible to enrol in the Diploma in Languages you must already be enrolled in one of the following undergraduate degrees at the University of Melbourne:

Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Biomedicine
Bachelor of Commerce
Bachelor of Design
Bachelor of Music
Bachelor of Science

TOEFL Internet-based test: total score of at least 79 and scores of 21 for writing, 18 for speaking, 13 for reading and 13 for listening; IELTS: total score of at least 6.5 in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0; Pearson Test of English Academic : overall score of at least 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50; Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Cambridge English Score of at least 176 with no skill below 169; C2 Proficiency (previously called Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) examination): Cambridge English Score of at least 180 with no skill below 180.
