This Melbourne MicroCert gives you access to leading creative and performing arts professionals from the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music who will demystify the creative process and help you build confidence in your own creative thinking. Your tutors will lend expert insight into how creative professionals consistently generate ideas and how you can foster habits that encourage sustained creativity.
Our innovative online learning environment provides an ideal space to test new ideas, from a location that suits you. You will be guided through a series of workshops and collaborative exercises to develop a professional creative identity and a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative dexterity.

This Melbourne MicroCert is valuable for any professional who wants to improve their capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving. You may wish to apply these skills directly to your own work, or, you may be a leader, emerging leader or manager who wants to enhance or reimagine workplace processes, or inspire creativity within your organisation or team. You will find these knowledge, skills and attributes can also be applied with equal value to practices outside of the workplace.
Throughout Generating Creativity you will explore a range of creative practices and elements of the creative process such as:
Defining strategies and tools for ideas generation, appropriate to context
Developing a personal-professional creative identity
Developing models for sustained and safe creative thinking and practices
Identifying environments conducive to creativity.
On completion of this Melbourne MicroCert, you will be able to:
Use of a range of methodologies for prompting creative thinking and creative outputs, which include precinct, locale and specialised safe environment/s
Practice flexible and adaptive thinking skills demonstrated through a range of genre
Innovate through independent and shared judgements
Create a professional creative identity that can advocate new ideas and apply protocols for a sustained practice through resilience and bravery.
This Melbourne MicroCert features immersive online learning approaches and technologies, such as digital studios and breakout rooms for active discussion and collaboration.
Within a safe community of practitioners, you will be encouraged to draw upon your own lived experience and develop a portfolio of work involving media such as:
Workshop exercises may include:
Collaborations and ensemble work
Narrative, discussion and personal reflection
Demonstrations, scenario building and role play
Examination of case studies and examples
Interactive and experiential workshop activities.
This Melbourne MicroCert is taught over four days, each day you will undertake a two-hour synchronous workshop and an additional eight hours of asynchronous guided learning. You will also undertake a further 12 hours of independent practical experimentation and 12 hours for assessment preparation.
Pathways to further study
Generating Creativity can be taken as a stand-alone Melbourne MicroCert, or you can complement it with any other Melbourne MicroCert in the Artful Communications suite, in whatever order you choose.
