Summary

Then our course in individual support will help you gain essential, person centred skills and knowledge to care for and support older people living in residential and aged care facilities.

In this health course, you’ll learn how to provide physical and psychosocial support for older people, such as how to:

  • support people who may be living with dementia and/or other illnesses
  • prevent falls
  • provide palliative care
  • support independence and wellbeing
  • develop communication skills in health and community services

You’ll understand how to comply with the accreditation requirements in the aged care sector. You’ll be ready to deliver outstanding customer service and support to older people.

During our individual support course, you can benefit from the opportunity to do a work placement with leading aged care providers.

Career Outcomes

After successful completion you may wish to apply for a range of aged care employment opportunities in local government, community organisations and aged care facilities and private nursing homes. As part of your work placement, most students will have the opportunity to work with leading aged care providers. On completion of your course, you may be offered employment by your workplace provider.

Course Structure

The course comprises 13 units, 7 core units and 6 electives.

Pathways and Accreditation

Successful completion will enable you to apply for further studies in related health courses including in Certificate lV in Ageing Support Certificate IV in Disability, Certificate IV in Allied Health or the Diploma of Nursing.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3

Entry criteria

International students must have completed:

  • Australian Year 10 or international equivalent with a pass.
  • A current National Police Check (must be arranged after the course commencement, but prior to commencement of work placement)
  • Evidence of Immunisation Requirements: 'Category A' Health Care Worker, prior to placement (i.e. Diphtheria/Tetanus; Poliomyelitis; Measles/Mumps/ Rubella; Varicella Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox); Hepatitis B; Mantoux Test, Flu vaccine). (must be arranged after the course commencement, but prior to commencement of work placement)

PLEASE NOTE: Box Hill Institute only accept enrolments from International students who are 18 years of age or above at the time of course commencement.

English Language Requirements

A minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5 (Academic). A minimum TOEFL score of 530 for paper examination; 179 for computer based and 71 for Internet based; Pearson Test (PTE): 46 (with no communicative skill score less than 42); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 162-168; Occupational English Test: Minimum score of D in each of the four components.
