Summary

Enrol in our community services course and develop the knowledge and skills to work with individuals, families, social groups or larger communities to support activities, information and referrals for people in need of assistance in our communities.

If you aspire to operate at an advanced skill level or have responsibility for the supervision of other staff and volunteers, this community services course is for you. You’ll be ready to work as a community services professional in a range of service delivery roles including direct client work, community education or community development projects. You’ll understand how to provide support to people in need of assistance and how to link clients to appropriate services and government departments.

This course has a guaranteed pathway into the Bachelor of Community Services at Box Hill Institute (direct entry into second year).

Completion of this course will also enable you to negotiate up to 8 credit points (equivalent of one year full-time study) of credit for the following programs at Deakin University:

  • Bachelor of Social Work
  • Bachelor of Psychology with Honours

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 5

Course Structure

Delivered over 18 months within 3 teaching semesters.

To be assessed as competent in this qualification, you are required to undertake 400 hours supervised work placement in a relevant community service delivery setting, involving, for example, direct client work or community education or development. The 400 hours must be split across two different workplace roles.

Entry criteria

International students must have:

  • successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or international equivalent with a pass, or
  • a relevant Certificate IV in Youth Work or Community Services level qualification, and/or
  • significant relevant industry experience to be deemed capable to successfully complete the course.

Working with Children Checks and Police Record Checks are a requirement for industry work placement.

PLEASE NOTE: Box Hill Institute only accept enrolments from international students who are 18 years of age or above at the time of course commencement.

English Language Requirements

A minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5 (Academic) with no band less than 5.0; A minimum TOEFL score of 530 for paper examination; 179 for computer based and 71 for Internet based; Pearson Test (PTE): 46 (with no communicative skill score less than 42); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 162-168; Occupational English Test: Minimum score of D in each of the four components.
